Criteria

With a constitutional amendment to end partisan gerrymandering hanging in the balance, Unite America sought to support a slate of candidates who would put the interests of their constituents ahead of their political party.

Our endorsement committee looked for candidates who were in safe red or blue districts, supported the amendment to establish a redistricting commissions, and were committed to joining a bipartisan caucus.

Candidates

Ultimately, Unite America endorsed one Republican and two Democrats in the June 2019 primaries.

  • State Senator Emmett Hanger Jr, R-24
Senator Emmett Hanger is a veteran statesman from Augusta, and had co-patroned the initial bill supporting an independent redistricting commission. His commitment to bipartisanship landed him an partisan challenger to his right. Unite America sought to protect him as proven bipartisan. Hanger won his primary election with 57% of the vote.
  • Suhas Subramanyam, D-HD87
Delegate Suhas Subramanyam is an Obama administration policy advisor and small business owner, and an outspoken advocate for better governance. Subramanyam was running to represent an open seat in a four-way primary. Subramanyam won his primary election with 47% of the vote.
  • Martha Mugler, D-HD91
Delegate Martha Mugler is a former school board representative who was running in an open seat for the newly re-drawn HD-91. With a primary challenge to her left, Mugler sought to serve as an advocate on issues of education, healthcare, and climate change. Mugler won her primary with 69% of the vote.
